22. ALLIES STOP GERMAN U-BOATS

In 1943 American, Canadian and British subchasers and small aircraft carriers begin to reduce the menace of the German U-boats. The U. S. S. Coast Guard Cutter Spencer battles this one in a surface engagement and destroys it.

The successful American and British Invasion of Sicily in July 4 1943 is not without cost in ships and men. Nazi dive bombers score a direct hit on an American cargo ship laden with high explosive
24. FIRST DAYLIGHT AIR RAID ON ROME

A B-26 Marauder is seen dropping its bombs on the railroad
yards in Rome. Perfect precision bombing keeps estruction
far away from non-military targets including the Vatican, seen in the lower right hand corner.
